Five warm-ups for grades 6–8. Each takes three to five minutes. Answers and teacher notes are in the collapsed box under each prompt.

ELA

Each word below starts with a prefix. Underline the prefix, write what it means, and then write what the whole word means. Bonus: invent a new word using one of these prefixes and define it.

  1. supersonic
  2. transatlantic
  3. submarine
  4. misunderstand
  5. preview
Answer and teacher notes

1. super- = above or beyond; supersonic = faster than the speed of sound. 2. trans- = across; transatlantic = crossing the Atlantic Ocean. 3. sub- = under; submarine = under the sea (marine = sea). 4. mis- = wrongly; misunderstand = understand incorrectly. 5. pre- = before; preview = see before.

Point out that knowing a handful of prefixes unlocks hundreds of words. Ask students to name another word for each prefix (superhero, transport, subway, mistake, prepay). Today is the anniversary of the first flight faster than sound, on October 14, 1947, so “supersonic” is a timely one.

Math

A student logged how many minutes they read each day for a week: 12, 15, 9, 15, 20, 14, 13.

  1. Find the mean, median, mode, and range.
  2. On day 8 they read for 30 minutes. Which changes more, the mean or the median?
Answer and teacher notes

1. Sum: 12 + 15 + 9 + 15 + 20 + 14 + 13 = 98. Mean = 98 ÷ 7 = 14. In order: 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15, 20, so the median is the 4th value, 14. Mode = 15 (appears twice). Range = 20 − 9 = 11.

2. New sum: 98 + 30 = 128, and 128 ÷ 8 = 16, so the mean rises by 2. New order: 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15, 20, 30; median = (14 + 15) ÷ 2 = 14.5, a rise of only 0.5. The mean changes more, because one unusually large value pulls the mean but barely moves the middle. Common mistake: finding the median without putting the numbers in order first.

Science

You see a flash of lightning and count 10 seconds before you hear the thunder. About how many miles away was the lightning? Explain why you see the flash before you hear the sound, even though both happen at the same moment.

Answer and teacher notes

The National Weather Service rule: count the seconds and divide by 5. 10 ÷ 5 = about 2 miles. Check another way: sound travels about 1,100 feet per second near sea level, so 10 × 1,100 = 11,000 feet, and 11,000 ÷ 5,280 ≈ 2.1 miles.

Light travels almost a million times faster than sound, so the flash reaches you nearly instantly while the sound takes several seconds. Safety note worth sharing: thunder can only be heard about 10 miles away, so if you can hear it, you are close enough to be struck. Count from indoors.

Social Studies

On October 14, 1066, William, duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings and the Normans became England’s rulers. The story was later stitched into the Bayeux Tapestry, a strip of embroidered linen about 230 feet long and 20 inches high. (a) How many years ago was the battle? (b) Why might people in the 1000s have told this story in pictures instead of mostly in writing? Give two reasons.

Answer and teacher notes

(a) 2026 − 1066 = 960 years.

(b) Answers will vary. Strong reasons: most people could not read, pictures can be understood by speakers of different languages (the Normans spoke French, the English spoke Old English), and a huge display in a church would impress everyone who saw it. The tapestry has more than 70 scenes. Timely detail: it is on display at the British Museum in London from September 2026 through July 2027, its first time in England in about 900 years.

Current Events

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship launched at 6:33 a.m. Eastern time carrying more than 6,300 pounds of supplies and experiments to the International Space Station. It is scheduled to dock at about 11:00 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, October 15. (a) How long is the trip, in hours and minutes? (b) One experiment sends tiny lab-grown models of the human brain to the station for five weeks, while identical models stay on Earth. Why keep a matching set on the ground?

Answer and teacher notes

(a) Tuesday 6:33 a.m. to Thursday 6:33 a.m. is 48 hours. From 6:33 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. is 4 hours 27 minutes. Total: 52 hours 27 minutes. Check: 52 h 27 min = 3,147 minutes, and 48 × 60 + 267 = 3,147.

(b) The models on Earth are the control group. Comparing the two sets lets scientists tell which changes were caused by microgravity and not by something else, like the age of the cells. Extension: the ship is also carrying the station’s final pair of roll-out solar arrays, which astronauts plan to install on spacewalks later this fall. Why would a space station need more electricity as it gets older?
