What to Do With Exit Ticket Answers the Next Day
Collecting exit tickets is the easy part. The real value comes the next morning, when you use what students told you. Here is how to turn a stack of answers into a better lesson.
Sort into three piles
Read each answer and put it in one of three piles:
- Got it: Ready to move on.
- Almost: Small mistake or missing detail.
- Not yet: Big misunderstanding or no idea where to start.
Do not overthink it. A quick read is enough. You are looking for patterns, not perfect scores.
Look for the most common mistake
Flip through the “almost” and “not yet” piles. Is the same error showing up again and again? That is your reteach for tomorrow. One clear fix for one common mistake helps more than reteaching the whole lesson.
Ways to use the piles tomorrow
- Two-minute reteach: Open class by fixing the most common mistake for everyone.
- Small group: Pull the “not yet” students to your table while others start work.
- Peer partners: Pair a “got it” student with an “almost” student.
- Challenge: Give the “got it” pile a harder problem so they do not wait.
Show anonymous answers
Put two or three answers on the board with the names covered. Show a strong one and one with a common mistake. Ask the class what makes the first one strong and how to fix the second. Students learn a lot from seeing real work from their own class.
Track it over a week
Keep a simple class list. Put a mark next to students who land in “not yet.” If the same names show up three or four days in a row, that student needs more help than a reteach. It may be time to talk with them or loop in support staff.
Tell students you used it
Say it out loud: “Yesterday’s exit tickets showed me a lot of us mixed up these two steps, so let’s fix that.” Students take exit tickets more seriously when they see the answers change the lesson.
Keep it light
You do not need a spreadsheet. A sticky note with five names on it is enough data for tomorrow. The best system is the one you will actually use every day.
Pair with a warm-up
A bell ringer is the perfect place for your reteach. Find a fitting prompt in our bell ringer library, then end class with a new prompt from our exit ticket tool. Need help keeping this quick? Read how to use exit tickets without losing class time.
